Many IMSA students and staff tuned in on Monday, November 2nd at 3:30 pm to watch IMSA student Bonny Jain compete in an episode of Jeopardy. The event was screened in the lecture hall, which was filled to capacity despite the fact that the show aired while several classes were still in session.

The Time Is Now

BY GOVIND GOVIND-THOMAS

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 11:15 p.m., House Democrats (and one Republican) pushed through House Resolution 3962: the Affordable Health Care for America Act. This monumental moment was the result of months of laborious work by representatives from the House Budget Committee. But now that health reform is closer than ever, the obvious question looms: should it really be passed? I think that the answer is a clear yes.

Not Time for Health Care Reform

BY GARRETT FLACK

I’m not going to hide it: I’m a Republican. I’m also in favor of health care reform. However, I do not think that it would be beneficial for our current economy. I’m not here to spout outlandish claims of “death panels” deciding who lives and who dies, but it’s no secret that the economy is not doing well.

Astrological Signs

BY SARAH VO

The date on which you were born determines what your astrological sign, which falls under one of twelve divisions of the zodiac where the different sections represent the various positions of the sun, moon, and planets.  Horoscopes can be fun to read on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, providing insight on health, love, and career.  Each astrological sign has unique personality traits, which can be read below.

The Unseen Epidemic

BY GARY SHENG

I never appreciated my 20/20 eyesight until my Mom took me to the ophthalmologist for the first time when I was barely fourteen. I was the only person in my entire family, extended family included, to have perfect vision until that day. While I am still fortunate to have the vision that I do, my Mom was barely able to read the cover of Time magazine from a few feet away prior to Lasek surgery. Having such poor-vision parents, I always assumed that I'd inherited my short-sightedness from them and could do little to stop my vision from deteriorating.

Why I Don't Write "Love" on My Arms

BY KATIE FUNDERBURG

Apparently, November 13 was Worldwide "To Write Love on Her Arms" Day. To Write Love on Her Arms is an organization founded in 2006 by Jamie Tworkowski, aimed at those suffering from addiction, depression, or self-injury. The organization also focuses on suicide prevention.
If it sounds like a great cause, that's because it is, but TWLOHA isn't the only organization out there with that goal. So before you write "love" on your arms (or if you already did), think twice--it's not all it's cracked up to be. Look at the facts:

Ho Ho No

BY ASHLEY CZAPLICKI

For all the true nineties kids out there, I bring to focus the Holiday Armadillo (from everybody’s favorite show Friends). Offering the story of Christmas and Hanukkah, Ross attempts to teach his son about the holidays without the overexcitement of presents and big-bellied men. Try as he might, his teaching is rudely interrupted by the entrance of the big man in red, Santa Claus, asking what his son put on his Christmas list. This very scene represents our society’s failed efforts to stray away from the holiday retail hype we too often fall for today.

Gratitude Eating

BY CECE COUNTRYMAN

A time of gratitude. A time of family gatherings. A time of turkey. However, Thanksgiving doesn’t always mean turkey. There’s a vast variety of foods and traditions that people have when it comes to Thanksgiving. Some of which involves zero turkey, but almost all of which involves great food -- enough of it to keep you from being hungry…maybe for a few weeks.
